I posted my very first review on this day in 2010.
My reading has broadened and changed since that first post. I read more contemporary than historical these days and my reading has diversified in many other ways too – including more #ownvoices authors, books written by authors of colour, queer romance by queer authors and straight-identified authors, books written by disabled or neurodiverse authors and/or featuring characters with disabilities/neurodiversity. By no means is my reading diverse enough, but I’ve made a start.
My sensibilities have changed a lot in the last nine years too; thanks mainly to my Romancelandia friends I now have a far more feminist worldview and less tolerance for some behaviours, themes and characters to which I’d have previously given a pass. I’m sure if I were to revisit every book and every review (which will never happen because who has the time?) I’d find that some of my previous opinions I’d count as cringeworthy now. But I’m equally sure that some of those books would hold up beautifully and hopefully some of the reviews too.
There have been wonderful books, good books and terrible books. There has been Kaetrin’s Musings and then Dear Author and then also AudioGals. There has been Twitter, where I hang out a lot talking books with folks who mean the world to me and who provide me with community, support, friendship, inspiration and challenge. Thank you to everyone who helped me along the journey from there to here, particularly those who have been with me from the beginning – you know who you are.
I’m not sure I thought I’d still be blogging nine years later when I first started but I still love it and I plan on continuing as long as it’s fun.
Today I shall have cake to celebrate.
