Monthly Mini Review
Dream Maker by Kristen Ashley, narrated by Susannah Jones – B It’s a lot like the Rock Chick books. I liked it. Sure, there’s some gender essentialism and alpha he-man nonsense but it is a bit toned down from the earlier books and I was able to mostly overlook it. Mag even recycles! There were some things that didn’t make a lot of sense; for example, Evan is a stripper who makes pretty good tips and she dances for 8 hours a shift at Smithy’s – so her repeated references to being unfit confused me. Similarly, I was surprised that she didn’t know who Daisy was given that Daisy hangs out with the Smithy’s girls (or, at least, she did).
Of course there is a lot of over the top ridonkulousness but that’s exactly what I expected and what I wanted. Mag (aka Danny) was all in for Evan from the beginning and that is catnip for me.
There were some editing mistakes in the audio version – one of the narrator’s vocal errors was left in, as well as her correction so I don’t think it was proofed very well. There were also a couple of inconsistencies with character voices both within this book and within the wider universe and some use of the wrong character voice here and there. But mostly they were small things that were not difficult to overlook (although the editing issue was surprising given all the people listed at the end who had a hand in getting the book to market). Susannah Jones clearly has a lot of fun narrating books featuring the Rock Chicks. The “Dream Team”, as the next generation of girls have been dubbed by Lottie Mac, is very much the next gen of Rock Chicks and Hawk’s boys are the new Hot Bunch. Fortnum’s is back, as well as Tex and his amazing coffee and hilarious antics. Ms. Jones gets the vibe of the series and this, more than anything else, make these books such a pleasure to listen to.
I liked this one way more than Lottie’s novella. If Rock Chick is your jam, this one will probably hit the spot.
